Some squares in Rome are must-see during a visit to the Eternal City, while others are discovered along the streets, picturesque and animated by local life.
Monumental Squares
St. Peter’s Square stands prominently in front of the great basilica, with its immense elliptical colonnades creating a majestic perspective. Piazza Navona, with its elongated shape, recalls the ancient Stadium of Domitian and captivates with its monumental Baroque fountains, while Capitoline Hill Square, designed by Michelangelo on Rome’s legendary hill, combines architectural balance with historical symbolism. Meanwhile, Spanish Steps Square charms with its monumental stairway and perspective over part of the city.
From Majestic Spaces to Picturesque Squares
Among other majestic squares, Piazza Farnese stands out with the imposing palace façade and elegance. Piazza del Popolo offers a large harmonious space framed by elegant monuments. Piazza della Rotonda, located in front of the Pantheon in the heart of the city, is one of the liveliest and most evocative.
Some squares captivate with their lively and colorful atmosphere. Campo de’ Fiori attracts visitors with its market and bustling life, while Piazza di Santa Maria in Trastevere is a true gem with its church, fountain, and small terraces.
Roman squares often feature a fountain, sometimes at the center like the small Piazza Mattei with its Turtle Fountain. At other times, there is only a simple nasone as a water point, as in the medieval Piazza in Piscinula in Trastevere.
