Circus Maximus

circus in romeThe Maximus Circus is located in the small valley which separates the Palatine hill from the Aventin hill.

It was the seat of games since the beginnings of the city. The first installations were made of wood and probably go up at the time of etruscans kings (Tarquins) in the VIth century b-C.
The first stone structures go up from the IInd b-C century, they were related to the equipment used for the competitions.
It is with Julius Cesar that the first stone steps are built, giving to the building its final form towards 46 bC.
