Located east of the Palatine Hill and south of the Colosseum, the Caelian Hill is one of the seven original hills of ancient Rome.
It was densely populated during the centuries of the Roman Republic, before becoming the site of an important military castrum during the Empire.
Today, the hill is occupied by a large military hospital and by green spaces, including the Celio Park and the Villa Celimontana, where summer concerts are held.
Visitors can also discover several remnants of ancient Rome, including the Roman houses decorated with remarkable frescoes, as well as remains of temples and Roman streets.
Notable churches, some dating back to the early centuries of Christianity, can also be found, such as the unusual Saint Stephen in the Round, a circular church whose frescoes graphically depict numerous scenes of saintly martyrdom, the Basilica of Saints John and Paul, and the Four Crowned Saints.
