Moving east from the historic center of Rome, beyond the Forums and the Colosseum, the Via di San Giovanni in Laterano enters an area less dense in historic buildings. Still within the Aurelian Walls, it runs along the northern slope of the Caelian Hill, passes in front of the notable San Clemente Basilica, the major hospitals, and then reaches Rome’s cathedral, the Archbasilica of Saint John Lateran with the Scala Sancta.
Nearby, the Porta Asinaria crosses the Aurelian Walls enclosing the district.
To the north of Via di San Giovanni rises the Esquiline Hill, with the Aurelian Walls reaching the Porta Maggiore, and on the other side, the Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II. The surrounding district, multicultural, can be referred to as “Rome’s Little Chinatown.”
