View from Piazzale Garibaldi

The Janiculum is a Roman hill overlooking the right bank of the Tiber, rising 88 meters above the river. Its name, meaning “Hill of Janus,” is linked to the myth that this god founded a city here.
It is not one of the seven historical hills of early Rome, which are located on the opposite side of the river.

The Janiculum Belvedere is located around Piazza Giuseppe Garibaldi. It offers one of the finest views over Rome (along with those from Monte Mario and the Pincio), encompassing the entire historic city, with the Alban Hills on the horizon, and even reaching the Apennines.
It is a charming spot that has long been popular for the first romances of young Roman couples.
However, the serenity is briefly interrupted at precisely noon when a blank cannon shot is fired at the foot of the equestrian statue of Garibaldi, a tradition since 1904.

A fairly steep slope descends southeast into the Trastevere district, with an eastern section occupied by the Botanical Garden, passing by the Fountain of Acqua Paola and the Bramante Tempietto.
To the southwest stretches the more contemporary Monteverde district, whose older and more pleasant section is located on the heights and called Monteverde Vecchio, near the expansive Villa Doria Pamphilj park.
