Between Via Prenestina and Via Casilina in eastern Rome, the Pigneto district has become trendy in recent years for spending evenings with the Roman youth.
Like San Lorenzo, it was a popular working-class neighborhood developed in the early 20th century, also known for its anti-fascist culture.
Along Via Prenestina, one can find the remains of the circular mausoleum known as Torrione Prenestino, followed by abandoned power plants. A little further, the avenue crosses the Villa Gordiani park, where remnants of the 3rd-century imperial villa of the Gordian emperors can be admired.
Further on, the working-class district of Centocelle developed alongside the military airport in the early 20th century. In this area, the Forte Prenestino was built around 1885 and has been occupied for decades by a self-managed social center dedicated to urban culture, music, and more.
