Trevi Fountain in Rome

Trevi Fountain

On the hill of the Quirinal stands the seat of the Presidency of the Italian Republic, housed in the vast Quirinal Palace.
This district, elegant and rich in monuments, is among the most remarkable in Rome.
Below Quirinal Square, the Trevi Fountain, a Baroque masterpiece and undoubtedly the most famous in the city, is a unique global focal point for tourism.

On the Quirinal Hill

Near the Quirinal Palace, two neighboring churches illustrate 17th-century Roman Baroque architecture: San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane, designed by Borromini, and Sant’Andrea al Quirinale, created by his rival, Bernini. They reflect the distinct style of each artist.
Not far away, near the Palazzo Barberini and its important museum of ancient art, lies the Quattro Fontane crossroads, where each corner is adorned with a fountain. This spot marks the meeting point of three historic districts: Monti, Trevi, and Castro Pretorio. From here, the view stretches eastward toward the bell towers of Santa Maria Maggiore and westward to those of Trinità dei Monti.

The Trevi Rione at the foot of the hill

At the southern foot of the hill, before reaching Piazza Venezia and Via del Corso, stands the Palazzo Colonna, one of the most prestigious in Rome, which remained for centuries the property of major Roman families.
The district houses many churches, including the Basilica of the Holy Apostles, particularly noteworthy.
The nearby Via del Corso is a lively shopping street, mainly dedicated to clothing. Walking north along it, one encounters two important examples of Roman Art Nouveau: the Galleria Alberto Sordi and the Galleria Sciarra. Further on, in the Rione Colonna, the church of Sant’Andrea delle Fratte preserves several angels sculpted by Bernini.
