Historic district: Rione Celio

Rome_rione_XIX_celio_(logo)The Rione Celio, the 19th rione of Rome, takes its name from the Caelian Hill, one of the seven historical hills, whose name is linked to Caelius Vibenna, an Etruscan leader of the 6th century BC.
It was established in 1921, separated from the rione Campitelli.
Its coat of arms depicts an African bust adorned with elephant tusks, recalling the presence on the hill of legionaries led by Scipio Africanus, as well as the discovery of an African bust on Via Capo d’Africa. Located south of the Colosseum, it is a quiet district, with major monuments such as the Arch of Constantine, the Basilica of Saint Clement, and the Case Romane del Celio. The park of Villa Celimontana is a fine green space, and the churches of Santo Stefano Rotondo and Santi Quattro Coronati bear witness to Christian vitality.
Less frequented, the district retains charming streets. After 1870, residential buildings and a military hospital were constructed there.
