The Rione Colonna, the third rione of Rome (R. III), is located in the historic center of the city, within Municipio I.
Its name is linked to the Column of Marcus Aurelius, erected between 176 and 192 AD, which stands on Piazza Colonna at the heart of the district.
It is divided by Via del Corso, with a flat section to the west that was once part of the Campus Martius, and a slightly hilly section to the east towards the Pincio.
Piazza Colonna was redesigned in the 17th century, with Palazzo Chigi becoming a symbol of power. In 1696, Palazzo Montecitorio became the seat of the papal courts. Today, this district combines history, politics, and shopping, with commercial streets and the Galleria Alberto Sordi.
The coat of arms of the rione is a silver column on a red background.
