The Rione Prati, the 22nd of Rome’s rioni (R. XXII), was created in 1921, originally consisting of meadows, hence the name “prati” in Italian. It was urbanized after the Italian unification to house the officials of the new kingdom.
It is an elegant district located on the right bank of the Tiber, near the Vatican and the Borgo rione, characterized by wide avenues and Umbertino and Liberty-style architecture.
Via Cola di Rienzo, a major shopping artery, is filled with luxury boutiques, cafés, and refined restaurants.
Less touristy than the historic center, it is still close to landmarks such as Castel Sant’Angelo and the Vatican.
The coat of arms of the Rione Prati depicts Castel Sant’Angelo, in silver on a blue background, even though the building borders the rione.
