Historic district: Rione Sant'Eustacchio in Rome

Sant'Eustachio Rione in RomeThe Sant’Eustachio Rione is the 8th district of Rome (R. VIII), located in the historic center between the Pantheon and Piazza Navona, named after the basilica.
Originally part of the Campus Martius, it was urbanized with civil buildings in antiquity. With popular dwellings in the Middle Ages, it was also a center of charity around its basilica. Prestigious palaces were built during the Renaissance and afterwards.

Today it is a touristic district, yet it still retains charm and authenticity, with a central square around the church, the famous Sant’Eustachio Café, and the former University of La Sapienza.
Its architecture includes prestigious palaces such as Palazzo Madama, seat of the Italian Senate, and churches like Sant’Ivo alla Sapienza by Borromini.

Its coat of arms depicts a stag with a cross between its antlers, symbol of the conversion of Saint Eustace, a Roman general of the 2nd century who had this vision of Christ.
