Rome-Roma > Caelian Hill

Label: Caelian Hill

Located east of the Palatine Hill and just south of the Colosseum, the Caelian Hill (Celio in Italian) is one of the seven legendary hills of Rome.
Elongated in shape, it stretches from west to east for nearly two kilometers. To the east, it connects with the Esquiline Hill.
The western part was always densely populated during antiquity, and under the Republic the Servian Walls divided it in two. Under the Empire, barracks were built in the eastern section.
Today, housing is sparse, with the park of the Villa Celimontana to the west and a few churches. Along the streets one can see remains of antiquity, such as temple ruins, and Roman houses are open to visits.
