In the Esquiline District<\/h3>\r\nA few steps from the station, located in the Esquiline district, the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore<\/strong><\/a> lies further south toward the Monti district<\/a>.\r\nTo the southeast, one reaches Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II<\/strong>, notable for its cosmopolitan atmosphere, near the Arch of Gallienus<\/strong>, a remnant of the Servian Walls era.\r\n

Castro Pretorio<\/h3>\r\nFacing the main entrance of the station is the district of Castro Pretorio<\/strong><\/a>, which extends west and north of the station up to the Aurelian Walls, including Porta Pia and Porta Tiburtina.\r\nNear the station, the Palazzo Massimo alle Terme<\/strong><\/a> houses the largest section of the National Roman Museum<\/strong><\/a>, including a floor displaying reconstructed rooms of Roman villas with their wall frescoes.\r\nA large part of the area is occupied by the remains of the Baths of Diocletian<\/strong><\/a>, which contain another section of the National Roman Museum, and whose central hall was converted into the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli<\/strong> by Michelangelo.\r\nThe Piazza della Repubblica<\/strong>, on the Viminal Hill, is close to the station. From this square, Via Nazionale descends toward Piazza Venezia. Slightly further west, Piazza San Bernardo<\/strong> is surrounded by three churches and the terminal fountain of the Aqua Felice<\/strong> aqueduct. Via del Quirinale then descends southward across Quirinal Hill to reach Piazza Venezia (see Trevi and Quirinal district<\/a>).\r\n
