{"id":601,"count":1,"description":"[caption id=\"attachment_16360\" align=\"alignright\" width=\"300\"]<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rome-roma.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/basilique-sainte-agnes-hors-les-murs_1974.jpg\"><img class=\"wp-image-16360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rome-roma.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/basilique-sainte-agnes-hors-les-murs_1974-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"basilique-sainte-agnes-hors-les-murs_1974\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a> Basilica of Saint Agnes Outside the Walls[\/caption]\r\n\r\nThe districts that extend beyond the Aurelian Walls to the northeast are primarily residential, with urban development mainly dating from the 19th and early 20th centuries.\r\nThis area is crossed by two ancient Roman roads, the <strong>Via Salaria<\/strong> and the <strong>Via Nomentana<\/strong>, along which the Romans built numerous mausoleums and tombs before catacombs developed with the first Christians.\r\nThe northeastern boundary of these districts is marked by the <strong>Aniene River and its natural reserve<\/strong>.\r\n<h2>Along the Via Salaria<\/h2>\r\nLeaving Rome through the Porta Salaria, the Via Salaria passes not far from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rome-roma.net\/en\/villa-borghese\/\"><strong>Villa Borghese<\/strong><\/a> and then continues alongside <strong>Villa Ada<\/strong>, the city's second-largest public park, with its lake, woods, and some hills. This road is flanked to the west by the administrative districts of <em>Pinciano<\/em> and <em>Parioli<\/em>, and to the east by the more affluent districts of <em>Salario<\/em> and <em>Trieste<\/em>.\r\nAmong the catacombs along this route, the <strong>Catacombs of Priscilla<\/strong> are the main ones open to visitors.\r\n<h2>Along the Via Nomentana<\/h2>\r\nFurther south, between the <em>Salario<\/em> and <em>Trieste<\/em> districts on one side and the <em>Nomentano<\/em> district on the other, the <strong>Via Nomentana<\/strong> leaves Rome through the <strong>Porta Pia<\/strong>. Near the walls, in the space between the two Roman roads, lies the prestigious <strong>Villa Albani-Torlonia<\/strong>, an 18th-century countryside villa with gardens and a remarkable art gallery. Nearby, <strong>Copped\u00e8<\/strong> is a curious neighborhood built in the Art Nouveau style in the early 20th century, with astonishing architecture reminiscent of a fairy tale\u2014or perhaps more accurately, a witches' tale.\r\nThe <strong>Via Nomentana<\/strong> also passes in front of the small park of <strong>Villa Torlonia<\/strong> and its museums, and further along, the former remarkable sanctuary of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rome-roma.net\/en\/monumental-complex-of-saint-agnes-outside-the-walls\/\"><strong>Basilica of Saint Agnes Outside the Walls<\/strong><\/a> and its catacombs. Beyond this, it crosses the Aniene River via the <strong>Ponte Nomentano<\/strong>, which preserves significant remains. Further on lies the <strong>Monte Sacro<\/strong> district, a pleasant residential area developed in the 1920s.\r\n\r\n[su_note note_color=\"#f7ece1\" text_color=\"#333333\"]\r\n<h2>The ancient Via Salaria and Via Nomentana<\/h2>\r\nRome was supplied with salt via the <strong>Via Salaria<\/strong>, which is why it was named as such. This consular road running along the Tiber was probably already laid out by the Sabines before the Romans utilized it. It reached Rieti and crossed the Apennines before continuing to Ascoli Piceno and then the Adriatic coast.
