Escapades in the surroundings of Rome are not lacking and allow to rest outside the Italian capital, sometimes perceived as noisy and agitated. Near Ostia and the coast 25 km from Rome, a vast area is occupied by the archaeological park with the remains of Ostia Antica, the port city of ancient Rome. It is undoubtedly the most impressive Roman site in Lazio outside Rome, with the Villa d’Hadrien in Tivoli.
In Tivoli, a small town less than 30 km from Rome, there are remarkable sites. On the one hand antiquity found a major architectural expression in the remarkable Hadrian’s Villa built by the emperor in the 2nd century AD. On the other and near the city center, the Villa d’Este is a majestic 16th century Italian realization with its garden and fountains.
In Lazio, mainly north of Rome in the province of Viterbo, there are many Etruscan sites, especially necropolis. The most famous are those of Cerveteri and Tarquinia.
The Roman Castles are villages in the hills about 20 km from Rome to the east with the two pretty lakes of Albano and Nemi.
The places of the province of Viterbo, including the city of Viterbo with its Palace of the Popes and its medieval district, the many villages, Etruscan and natural sites.

Nearly 20 kilometres from Rome, Ostia Antica is one of the most beautiful Roman sites in the region. Beyond its great archaeological interest, it also offers a pleasant and relaxing setting. Ostia was the port that served ancient Rome at the mouth of the Tiber. Under the empire it was enlarged with the Imperial Harbours of Claudius and Trajan that can also be discovered, with the nearby Necropolis of Portus in the Isola Sacra and a Roman Ships Museum.

Par son ampleur et sa bonne conservation, la Villa d'Hadrien est une des plus importantes villas romaines, un bel exemplaire de l'architecture antique, bâtie à partir de l'an 126 de notre ère. North of Rome, in the province of Viterbo, there are many Etruscan remains. This land was indeed at the heart of Etruria, where this civilization long eclipsed behind their prestigious Roman successors, was nevertheless of great richness and influence.
In Cerveteri, the Etruscan necropolis extends over hundreds of hectares. They form real cities with streets and neighborhoods. In Tarquinia, there are other necropolis with tombs painted with remarkable frescoes, and into Tusciaare many other fascinating sites, often located in the middle of nature, such as Vulci, Norchia, Blera, San Giovenale, etc.
You can easily reach the sea from Rome, for example with the regional train, in about 30-45 minutes. If you have a car, the best climbs are between Sperlonga and Gaeta to the south, which is a bit far. Lido di Ostia is the closest coast to Rome, with its stretches of sand far from being the most attractive, but which have their interest.
About 20 km from the centre of Rome is Castel Gandolfo and the other hilltop villages of Roman Castles in the Alban hills. They are part of a regional park with two beautiful lakes surrounded by woods, the Albano Lake and the smallest and wildest Nemi Lake. The Romans often come to take the air on weekends, especially to enjoy in summer its freshness, but also the charm of its small towns and local gastronomy. It is indeed the region of the porchetta, the piglet on the spit, but also taverns offering charcuterie, cheese and small local wine.
You can easily reach Bracciano on its namesake lake by train from Rome. Around are several pretty villages and natural sites, as well as the wild little Martignano Lake. The protected Treja Valley runs up the river to the hilltop town of Calcata on its tuff rock, passing through the beautiful waterfalls of Monte Gelato.

Viterbo is a pretty town in Lazio, especially for its Palace of the Popes and its medieval quarter. In its province are the charming Bolsena Lake, the many Etruscan sites of the Tuscia, villages of character such as Cività di Bagnoregio and Sutri, or small medieval towns like Orte, Tuscania or Tarquinia. In the 16th century, the Farnese family marked these lands with palaces and castles, where the Villa Farnese in Caprarola stands out.
On the road to Naples, the Province of Frosinone has remarkable places such as Anagni with its rich religious complex, and to the east the Monte Cassino, dominated by the great abbey founded by Saint Benedictt in the 6th century and which was the scene of a great battle during the Second World War. Between these two sites are a large number of character villages in the area designated as Ciocciara, such as Alatri and Arpino with their Cyclopean walls, the Roman Ferentino, or to Alvito and Sora heights.
The Province of Latina runs along the coast southeast of Rome. You can discover beautiful beaches and coastal portions, but also small towns and historic villages, such as the beautiful Gaeta which is the easternmost, Terracina and Sperlonga, natural sites including the Circeo National Park, shrines, etc. It also includes the charming Pontine Islands including Ponza 1h20 crossing. Its provincial capital, Latina, is not a tourist destination, but it is a special city, having been founded in 1932 during the remediation of the marshes of the region in the fascist era, as a model city.
North of Rome, the Province of Rieti is culturally less rich, but its nature is generous. Its territory includes a large part of the hills of the Sabine Hills which are covered with olive trees and have many pretty villages and shrines. It rises to the summits of the Apennines at an altitude of more than 2,000 metres. At its feet are several pretty lakes formed by dams. Its capital Rieti, surrounded by mountains, is an interesting city that dates back to the Romans, where abundant water played a major role for centuries.
Cerveteri is one of the main Etruscan sites of Lazio with its huge necropolis occupying hundreds of hectares. They date from the period from the 9th to the 3rd century BC.
The main site is the Necropolis of Banditaccia, which the the area to visit has "only" 10 of the 400 hectares of its surface, with thousands of graves organized according to an almost urban plan with its neighborhoods and streets and squares. Some tombs look like houses, while others are monumental and have large circular tumuli.
