Piazza Madonna dei Monti

The Monti district, or Rione Monti, is named after the several hills it occupies, including the Esquiline, which rises just above the Imperial Forums, where the ancient Subura once stood, and the small Viminal Hill, which precedes the Quirinal Hill to the west.
It is one of the most pleasant districts in central Rome, worth visiting both for its churches and narrow streets, as well as for its welcoming bars and restaurants that can be enjoyed in the evening when the area becomes lively, frequented by both tourists and Romans.
Among its notable monuments are first the basilica of San Pietro in Vincoli, home to Michelangelo’s famous Moses. Also noteworthy is the remarkable church of Santa Prassede, which preserves extraordinary Byzantine mosaics. Nearby, the grand Basilica of Saint Mary Major is located in the neighboring Rione Esquilino.

The eastern part of the district is the Oppian Hill, which rises north of the Colosseum and the Ludus Magnus. Nero built a lavish palace here, whose remains can still be visited along with the rooms of the Domus Aurea.
