The Tiburtino district lies beyond the Aurelian Walls and the railway line. It is characterized by the presence of the La Sapienza University Campus and the Verano Monumental Cemetery.
Location of Tiburtino
This area is situated north of the Porta Maggiore and is also crossed by the ancient Via Tiburtina, which exits Rome through the Porta Tiburtina. The railway line defines the eastern boundary of the district with Casal Bertone, which precedes the Via Prenestina and the nearby Pigneto neighborhood.
San Lorenzo and Collatino
The area adjoining the ancient walls is the San Lorenzo district, historically working-class and socialist, now frequented by young people for its numerous bars and clubs. The Porta Tiburtina and sections of the Aurelian Walls are notable here. The former Basilica of Saint Lawrence Outside the Walls is a fascinating building dating back to the 4th century AD, adjacent to the Verano Monumental Cemetery (see also the dedicated San Lorenzo district page).
Further along the Tiburtina, in the Collatino area around Via Edoardo Arbib, the small INA-Casa neighborhood from the 1950s is an example of architectural Neo-Realism.
