Section: Bridges of Rome

A small section dedicated to historical bridges of Rome that are referenced on our site. Since antiquity, they spanned the Tiber to reach Trastevere. Most of the ancient structures struggled to withstand the passage of time due to the Tiber’s powerful floods and periods of neglect. However, modifications over the centuries have allowed some to be preserved.
From north to south, we mention: Ponte Milvio (outside the city walls), Bridge of Saint Angel (providing access from the city center to the Vatican and Castel Sant’Angelo), Ponte Sisto, Ponte Cestio and Ponte Fabricio (connecting the Tiber Island), and the ruin of the Broken Bridge (Ponte Rotto).
