Section dedicated to religious sanctuaries such as cemeteries, and especially the catacombs, which were vast and numerous on the outskirts of ancient Rome.
Along the Via Appia Antica, one can access the most renowned catacombs of the city: those of Saint Sebastian, Saint Callixtus, and Domitilla. To the northeast, outside the walls of Rome between Via Salaria and Via Nomentana, extensive underground complexes form the catacombs of Priscilla and Saint Agnes.
Among the city’s cemeteries, the monumental Campo Verano occupies a vast area beyond the San Lorenzo district. In Testaccio, a cemetery is dedicated to non-Catholics, where the graves of many artists can be found. North of Rome, a French military cemetery is located on a small hill. The Vatican has preserved the small Teutonic Cemetery.
